Nice to meet you! I’m Joey Rushfield, a longtime portrait photographer and rising wedding photographer. As someone whose first love is portraiture, I have a keen eye for making people look amazing, whether it's the right angles and lighting or through my cinematic, film-inspired editing style. My photographic approach to weddings is documentary-based and candid-first, leaning heavily into authentic moments. On a wedding day, my goal is to deliver hundreds of amazing storytelling images, as well as portraits worthy of hanging in your home as a newlyweds.

By the end of the wedding day, I hope you feel like you've spent it with a friend who happened to have a camera. You'll be able to count on me for comic relief, emotional support, and maybe even a little lighthearted sass. My goal is to perfectly code-switch between being a fly-on-the-wall, unobtrusive observer and an active resource for you to lean on, making the day more fun and memorable, yes, but also more comfortable. FAQ

How do you edit your photos?

I edit photos with a distinctive, yet flexible style that somehow finds the best of three worlds. With contrasty tones, moody vibes, and bright but full-bodied details, my editing style is built to highlight emotion -- all with a film-like, timeless twist.

Every photo you receive is hand-edited. I use tools like presets to get to a starting point to ensure stylistic consistency, but each photo gets a ton of love and care once it's been given its initial treatment.
How would you describe your style?

My style is unique -- an amalgamation of photojournalistic, documentary, portrait-focused, cinematic, emotive, and timeless. I blend documentary, candid photography with a healthy dose of posed fine art portraiture.
How far do you travel for a wedding day?

I'm based out of Rockville and am happy to travel within two hours at no extra cost. And frankly, living in the DMV area means you rarely need to go further. But if you have a spectacular location or want to fly out somewhere further, I'm happy to create a custom package with you. I'm partial to beaches, by the way :)
I'm on a budget. Are we still able to work together?

Absolutely! I have no problem working with you to condense the day's coverage into a shorter timeline so you get beautiful photos of what you want without having to lose out on quality by going with a less seasoned photographer. All of my packages are customizable and can have elements (ie albums, engagement sessions) removed to save money as well.
How do you approach working with interracial couples? I know that some photographers have trouble keeping skin tones natural and detailed.

I have a method that works for people regardless of skin color: I design the baseline tones for my images for the darkest parts of a subject's skin tone and tweak from there, rather than building the image around the lightest part and hoping I can salvage details in editing. As for skin colors, my editing style is relatively true-to-life, with the only significant changes being that photos are a bit warmer and more nostalgic-looking than they actually looked... because I want to preserve how they *felt.*
Do you work with LGBTQIA+ couples?

Absolutely. As a queer photographer myself, I have a special connection with couples who are part of our community. I will 100% cry during your vows, by the way.
