A Closer Look
Villa Muggia is all softness. Its cream walls look out over Lake Maggiore in Stresa, and its lawns slope to the water, shaded by copper-leafed maples. Laura and Hunter didn't tone their wedding down for it. With Parade Wedding, they turned the color up until it nearly glowed, in hot pink, tangerine, lemon and chartreuse that bordered on neon, and let everything delicate about the day sit inside that frame.
Petali Di Alice cut through the grounds with it first. Vibrant, weaving florals lined a curving aisle of clear seats, where hot pink roses, gerberas, hydrangeas and spikes of yellow grew straight out of the grass, and rusted iron obelisks lifted more of them into the air. Against the green lawn, it read as one long stroke of paint. A string quartet in tiered blush gowns played nearby, and Laura walked to Hunter in a strapless ivory ball gown covered in appliqué, with a corseted back and a veil edged to match. With so much brightness around her, she was the softest thing there.
Her bridesmaids wore both sides of the palette. Tangerine, butter yellow, hot pink satin, magenta and rust mixed with olive pleats, sage ruffles and soft champagne. The pastels kept the brights from shouting, and the brights kept the pastels from fading into the hedges. Standing in a row with single stems in hand, they gave every shade along the aisle a face.
Guests gathered in front of the villa's terraced fountain under green-and-white scalloped parasols and raised orange cocktails, while Delicatezze Catering sent out canapés built as tiny vegetable patches, with carrot, radish and sprouts poking out of pink mousse. The escort display from Say It With Tanto Love showed how the soft and the bright worked together. Pale pink toile wrapped the board under the words Our Favorite People, and sage oval tags for every guest dangled from ombré tassels that faded from white into peach, gold and mint. The quiet background let the tassels glow, and a bank of hot pink roses at its foot brought the volume up again.
In the estate's glass-and-iron greenhouse, the aisle returned. Serpentine tables in sage linen wound beneath the ironwork, and the same weaving florals overflowed down their centers between slim tapers, spilling coral, fuchsia and lemon over the edges toward the cane-back chairs. Then came the surprise. Fringe chandeliers in every hue of the day hung from the rafters, from chartreuse and marigold to powder pink and emerald. They were the last thing anyone would look for in a greenhouse, and they made the whole room a party. At every seat, a die-cut watercolor flower in coral rested on a green napkin, lettered with a name and the menu, which opened with agnolotti del plin.
After dark on the terrace, Laura and Hunter picked up piping bags and topped a millefoglie from Delicatezze Catering with rosettes. Strawberries were heaped over its layers, and peonies circled the stand. Below all that red, the pastry stayed pale, the way the villa and the pastels had all day. By dessert, the garden had borne fruit.
